Professor and Chairman,Department of Neurosurgery
Greetings – Professor Ichiro Nakagawa
I am pleased to announce that I have been appointed Professor of the Department of Neurosurgery, Nara Medical University, as of November 16, 2023.
On behalf of the Department of Neurosurgery, I would like to extend my greetings.
Our department was established in 1960 as the Second Department of Surgery by the first Professor Yutaka Hori, and has since developed under the leadership of the second Professor Shozaburo Utsumi (appointed in 1979), the third Professor Toshisuke Sakaki (appointed in 1990), and the fourth Professor Hiroyuki Nakase (appointed in 2009).
Inheriting the history and tradition of the Department of Neurosurgery at Nara Medical University, we intend to contribute to the development of the Department by continuously providing state-of-the-art neurosurgical care to the local community, based on our contribution to regional medical care and the training of the next generation.
Neurosurgery deals with a wide range of neurological diseases involving the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous system. As the final line of defense to protect the community, we will work to realize an emergency medical system that does not refuse requests for emergency transport or emergency hospitalization, and we will focus on the training of experts in various fields of neurosurgery to fulfill our responsibilities as the prefectural base hospital for functional surgery such as stroke, brain tumors, epilepsy, spinal cord surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, neurotrauma, etc. We will focus on training experts in each field of neurosurgery so that we can fulfill our responsibility as a prefectural base hospital.
The most important thing for our department is “not only to cure diseases, but also to eliminate the suffering of patients with diseases. In addition to practicing high-quality medical care, we always respect the patient’s point of view and aim to provide neurosurgical care that is trusted by patients and their families. To this end, the entire department is committed to nurturing medical professionals who possess not only advanced medical knowledge and surgical skills, but also humanistic competence with compassion and empathy for patients.
We hope to convey to medical students and residents the fascination of the brain as an unknown organ and the satisfaction and joy of being a neurosurgeon. In addition to enhancing clinical education in neurosurgery, we also consider it our mission to research and develop new diagnostic techniques and treatment methods. We hope that many of you will aspire to become neurosurgeons and walk with us.
Welcome to your visiting and training in our department.
